Shielded vs Unshielded Sensors
Shielded sensors can detect literally all solid materials within their sensing range such as powders, paper, wood, plastic pellets, oil based liquids, etc.  They can be flush mounted in metal.

As with all of our capacitive sensors, a compensation electrode is incorporated. This electrode senses contamination such as dirt build-up and the sensor compensates for it.

Unshielded sensors are best for detecting targets which are conductive (metals and water based liquids for example). Since for the most part they ignore non-conductive materials, they are perfect for detecting water based liquids through a non-conductive tank wall!
